"Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of GM is famous as the major US locomotive builder since the 1940's. Except for 2 demonstrators DH1 & DH2, the only real commercial small locomotive venture was the Model 40, introduced in 1940.

GM Diesel Div, GMC's Canadian locomotive subsidiary, built the only other industrial sized' locomotive, GMDH, of which only 5 were built.These were GM's only known attempts at hydraulic transmissions."⁽¹⁾
