Baltimore & Ohio RR
Part 3: Appalachian operations

Leaving Washington, the B & O heads west through Harpers Ferry to
Cumberland, Md., where the line splits. One route bears north to Pittsburgh,
then west through upper Ohio and along the lower lake shore to Chicago;
the line known as the "Capitol Route".
The other heads west to Parkersburg, WVa., on the Ohio river. Here, a
cross line links Pittsburgh with the C & O at Huntington WVa. Crossing
the Ohio, the "National Route" heads due west for Cincinnati and
on to St. Louis.
The hills of Virginia and West Virginia are rugged country, famous for
Sand Patch and 17 Mile Grade, where large mallets frequently double head
and helpers are common.
However, in the Appalachian mountain chain, branch line service predominates.
There are plenty of local branches feeding the small coal mining communities.
Here, the rails are light, maintenance is not up to mainline standards and
dispatching is still done by train order.
There are several top Name Trains that pass thru Appalachia - stopping
at a few major points, if at all - on their way west. However, the Appalachian
hills themselves are thinly settled and the roads are few. It is here that
local service has held on longest, with a wide array of locals and accommodation
trains. This one relatively small portion of the B&O system accounts
for roughly 1/3 of all their scheduled trains.

General Notes:
B&O makes extensive use of motor cars in the Appalachian mountain
region and applies an unusual distinction to them: single motor cars are
referred to as "motor cars" while a motor car hauling trailing
cars is known as a "motor train". These are not, however, motor
trains in the sense of the new lightweight articulated trains.
